Elm hedge

Experimental hedge to block wild boars through mechanical force, while providing local biomass and a trellis for hops.

The Elms are closely interplated with Alnus glutinosa and Salix alba. The hops and dense surrounding foliage may provide protection for the elm by making the trunk less visible to the bark beetle, a vector of Dutch Elm Disease.

A visual characteristic of the plant is its dark green elongated cones which contain moderate to somewhat high amounts of alpha acids compared to many other hop types. The resultant aroma is of medium strength and very distinct. It has a pleasant, flowery and spicy, citrus-like quality with a slight grapefruit characteristic. The hop is good for both flavor and aroma uses. It can also be used for bittering effectively, and can be used to make any ales, and indeed is characteristic of American pale ales, such as the classic Sierra Nevada. It is also used in some lagers, for example Sam Adams ' (Src:Wikipedia)

"Nitrogen fixation requires rare heavy-metal element molybdenum as a catalyst." ... "To fix 1 gram of nitrogen, an estimated 10-100 grams of glucose is required.' Most microorganisms rarely have energy resources to produce large amounts of fixed nitrogen. Higher plants can produce excess energy through photosynthesis, but they cannot produce the necessary enzyme." [oregonstate.edu]

[Plant supplier / nursery][naturalea.eu]
Cuttings directly on the ground need a wide area clearing and weed suppression, use large leaves and heavy thick mulch. [Can Neret]
